Yesterday Zazua and Wilma were professionally groomed for the first time in a 12 months. I had been grooming them every couple months in the past year. At first glance, the dogs looked great and their demeanor seemed fine upon returning home. However, a couple minutes after coming in the door Zazua kept rubbing her face in a rug, something she only does when wet. I looked at her face to see if something was wrong, and sure enough there was a huge cut on the side of her face. I used cotton pads to remove the blood and puss and after that she left the wound alone. Then, when we went to bed she wouldn't stop scratching the cut and licking her paw after doing so. I woke up about every 15 minutes to tell her to stop, but she couldn't get comfortable. By 5 A.M. I finally got up with her to see if I could wrap her wound to keep her from irritating it further and found our sheets and pillows spotted all over with her blood; Tim said it looked like a crime scene--poor dog! We tried to concoct a couple devices to keep her from scratching until the vet opened and we could buy her a cone, but she managed to get everything off immediately. As soon as the vet opened we took her in and she wiggled out of the first two cones right away. Eventually they were able to keep the cone on her so she can begin healing. She absolutely hates the cone and has tried to get out of it a couple times, but luckily it's holding. She won't leave my side and seems really sad. I hope she doesn't think she's done something wrong and this is her punishment. Hopefully she'll be healed within a few days and can lose this contraption.
I went back to the groomers this afternoon to show them pictures and discuss the situation. The owner was extremely upset with the man who groomed them (shouting a few expletives) for not telling her or me what happened. Hopefully this incident will prevent another pup from getting hurt.
